Stocks revival 'to hurt' 2012-13 grain, soy prices

Inventories of major agricultural commodities are small enough this season to prevent prices from falling too far - but this may change in 2012-13, assuming a mild La Nina, Informa Economics said.

Forecasts for US corn , 2012-13 and (2011-12)

Sowings: 93.1m acres, (91.9m acres, USDA)

Yield: 163.5 bushels per acre, (148.1 bushels per acre, USDA)

Harvest: 14bn bushels, (12.4bn bushels, USDA)

Average futures price: $5.20 a bushel., ($6.45 a bushel)

The influential analysis group, expanding on forecasts made 10 days ago, said that Chicago corn futures would average about $6.45 a bushel this year, and Chicago wheat about $6.40 a bushel, on a near-lot basis, not far off current values.

The forecasts reflect an estimate that US corn stocks will end the season at 746m bushels, 120m bushels below US Department of Agriculture estimates.

Soybeans will average $12.90 a bushel, well above current levels, thanks to stocks which will, at 150m bushels, end 2011-12 some 10m bushels thinner than the USDA predicts.

Lower prices ahead

However, prices next year will fall back dramatically with the fading in the spring than the renascent La Nina, seen as a less severe version of the weather event than that last season.

Forecasts for US soybeans 2012- 13 and (2011-12)

Sowings: 77m acres, (75.0m acres, USDA)

Yield: 44.6 bushels per acre, (41.5 bushels per acre, USDA)

Carry-out stocks: 211m bushels, (150m bushels)

Average futures price: $11.75 a bushel., ($12.90 a bushel)

Forecasts by Informa except where otherwise stated

With higher sowings - and a yield rebounding to a record 44.6 bushels per acre, from 41.5 bushels per acre this year – US soybean output will hit an all-time high of 3.4bn bushels.

That will depress futures prices to $11.75 a bushel, a level rarely seen in the last year, Informa analysts told a conference at the weekend.

Corn futures will average $5.20 a bushel, a level not seen since November last year, thanks to output boosted to 14bn bushels by a rise in sowings and a rise in yield, offset somewhat by a rise in exports of the grain and higher use by livestock farmers and ethanol plants taking advantage of lower prices.

'Yields to bounce back'

Wheat futures will fall back to $6.05 a bushel, depressed by a 100m-bushel rise to 922m bushels in US inventories over 2012-13, thanks to a rise of some 1.5 bushels per acre, to 45.4 bushels per acre, in yields.

Forecasts for US wheat 2012-13 and (2011-12)

Yield: 45.4 bushels per acre, (43.9 bushels per acre, USDA)

Carry-out stocks: 922m bushels, (822m bushels)

Average futures price: $6.05 a bushel., ($6.40 a bushel)

Forecasts by Informa except where otherwise stated

This season, Informa "believe the balance table will remain tight and support the market on breaks", broker US Commodities said.

Next year, the forecast is for "yields to bounce back and press the market lower".
